Education is the key to dispelling myths and removing negative stereotypes about aging.
听Aging is a natural, normal and anticipated process that, unfortunately, carries the
stigma of reduced abilities. Everyone wants to live a long life but no one wants to
get old. Thanks to research and modern technology, people are living longer and healthier
lives. Early interventions, lifestyle changes, positive attitudes, and an age-friendly
environment may be able to reduce the negative stereotypes of old age.听听
The College of Business and Social Science, Gerontology Program, at the University
of Louisiana Monroe will be hosting the 鈥淐onference on Age and Aging: Multi-perspectives鈥澨齠rom
9 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 13 on the second floor of the Student Union Building
(SUB).
The听goal听is to educate people about healthy aging vs. unhealthy aging, focusing on
the prevention of non-normal aging issues, and addressing the negative stereotypes
of old age. The conference will focus on multiple dimensions and perspectives of the
aging process. Workshops will include the following topics: 听normal vs. not-normal
aging process; diet, nutrition, and exercises for healthy aging; diagnosis of depression
among the older adults; elder law; and Isolation and loneliness among the elderly.听听
The conference is open to public and will provide certificates of attendance to professionals
for five contact hours. CEUs have been applied for all the workshops.
There is no registration fee for the conference but registration is required by sending
an e-mail to听asharma@ulm.edu听In addition to offering five workshops, the conference will also include booths and
exhibits set up by organizations that provide services to older adults.听听
Registration will be from 8:45 a.m. to 9 a.m. Door prizes for all participants and
special gifts for students will be offered. The lunch session will require pre-registration.
